The Weighted Cup: A Guide to Ingredient Measures

When employing cup measurements, keep in mind that the size and form of the ingredient can impact how much fits into the cup. For instance, a measuring cup filled with nut pieces will weigh more than the same cup filled with whole nuts due to the difference in space between the nuts.

Similarly, the weight of flour in a cup can vary depending on its state. Sieving or whisking flour before measuring it can aerate it, meaning less weight will fit into the cup.

When dealing with sticky ingredients, it’s helpful to grease or heat the measuring cup, or use a spatula to ensure all of the ingredient is used.

The equivalents provided here are average weights of ingredients I commonly use. They are derived either from multiple weighings and subsequent rounding, or from a reliable source. This page is continually updated and expanded to provide you with the most accurate and comprehensive information.

I use a 250ml cup – standard in New Zealand and the United Kingdom and a cup is always full and level . For other metric and imperial conversions this page may be helpful. Don’t know what your measuring cup measures? Read this post.
